Der Autor erörtert zunächst das theoretische Konstrukt des Sensation looking anhand der empirischen Befunde. Auf der foundation einer kritischen Würdigung erfolgt die Vorstellung einer alternativen Konzeption, welche die Suche nach neuen und aufregenden Erfahrungen als Ausdruck eines Stimulationsbedürfnisses begreift. Durch diese Konzeptionsveränderung ergeben sich neue Fragestellungen und Forschungsansätze. Philipp Hammelstein präsentiert zunächst Forschungsinstrumente, die darauf zugeschnitten sind, das Bedürfnis nach Stimulation zu erfassen. Diese werden dann sowohl in klinisch als auch differentialpsychologisch relevanten Fragestellungen eingesetzt. Dabei wird u.a. untersucht, inwiefern pathologische Spieler ein erhöhtes, Angstpatienten aber ein erniedrigtes Stimulationsbedürfnis aufweisen oder ob es einen Zusammenhang zwischen sexuellem Risikoverhalten und dem Stimulationsbedürfnis gibt. Der Autor schließt diesen Teil mit einer Gesamtschau der Befunde ab. PD Dr. Philipp Hammelstein habilitierte sich mit dieser Arbeit an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Er ist heute in eigener Praxis niedergelassen als Psychologischer Psychotherapeut in Köln und engagiert sich in vielen psychotherapeutischen Weiterbildungsinstituten als Dozent."
