Download e-book for kindle: Poland's role in the development of an 'Eastern Dimension' by Andreas Lorek

By Andreas Lorek

Master's Thesis from the yr 2006 within the topic Politics - overseas Politics - area: jap Europe, grade: 1,5 , ecu college Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), 163 entries within the bibliography, language: English, summary: Im Zuge des Beitrittsprozesses zur ecu entwickelte Polen sein Konzept der ‚Eastern Dimension’.

New PDF release: State- and Nation-Building in Poland: "A Seasonal State?"

By Inga von der Stein

Essay from the yr 2013 within the topic Politics - foreign Politics - sector: japanese Europe, grade: nine, Maastricht collage, language: English, summary: "Saisonstaat” (seasonal country) - this used to be the pejorative identify Prussian historians labelled Poland with within the 18th century (Davies, 2005, pp. 24, 324). They did so within the face of the walls of Poland, which led to Poland thoroughly vanishing off the map (Davies, 2005, p. 386).

But why used to be Poland visible purely as an tool for Prussia and Russia in striving for hegemony? (Biskupski, 2000, p. 22) this query is tough to reply to and already provides a touch to the complexity of the method of nation- and nation-building in Poland, which deviates in lots of features from the Western eu international locations.

To supply a starting place for the techniques that this paper is predicated on, one must outline the phrases of either country and nation. based on Smith, a country is greater than purely an ethnic team yet a cultural- political neighborhood, residing in a space of payment and sharing a typical history, tradition and legislations (Smith, 1995, p. 57). the concept that of a nation utilized derives from Roberts. To him, a country is characterised through “the presence of ultimate authority, ruling over an outlined territory, who's well-known as having energy to make judgements in issues of presidency […]” (Roberts, 1979, p. 32).

Taking those definitions into account, this paper is split into 4 sections, touching on all the various phases within the nation- and nation-building technique to at least one season of the yr. This paper to start with examines the commercial “spring” of Poland, the Piast dynasty, thereafter cognizance is laid at the Jagiellonian interval, Poland’s “summer”, that's associated with the private union of Poland and Lithuania. within the subsequent part I study the “fall” of the Poland, that's characterised via the consolidation of the Nobility’s supremacy and the industrial decay of the rustic. this is often major as much as the final element of this paper, in addition to the walls which killed the Polish country, but the kingdom used to be changing into extra alive than ever.

My objective is to teach that the kingdom- and nation-building strategy of Poland used to be now not destined to develop into “a state just for a season” as claimed via Prussian historians, even though following a distinct approach, a kingdom country could have been profitable via the start of the nineteenth century if it had no longer felt sufferer to the desire of territorial enlargement by means of its neighboring empires (Weinberg, 1996, web page. 42).

To that finish, numerous strains of a poem named “Sezony” (seasons) written through an nameless Polish Poet shape the frame.
